The first thrill...World Cup 1983

When India won the World Cup in 1983, I was in my school and there used to be just the great Doordarshan channel available for viewing - interrupted by Doordarshan's News in the middle!!! Can't imagine life like that in 21st century!!!

Srikkanth was obviously the HERO with his shots of Roberts and Holding...Another image that comes to mind is that of Mohinder Amarnath's wicket flying off the bowling of Micheal Holding. I remember Kapil hitting a six of Larry Gomes and then getting out trying to repeat it. Then some lower order fightback to get to 183.

Then, the great Indian fightback. Bowlers like Kapil, Sandhu, Madan Lal, Binny made the WI struggle (of course, who can forget the strokes of Richards till he got out to catch by Kapil) and then the great Mohinder Amarnath again came back with his gentle bowling to close the WI. 6 wickets were down when the telecast was cut short for News and I fell asleep. Once the News was over, I could see that WI were 8 down and Kapil was trying hard to get his first wicket for the match. Then, he got Andy Roberts and then Mohinder got Holding LBW.

I can still remember all the players run to the Pavilion and then each of them being introduced to the Chief Guest (dont know who) and getting their medallion.

Finally, the famous photograph that everyone has seen for so many years for now...Kapil Dev and Mohinder Amarnath with the World Cup. Will 25th June come back for India again? As of current form, looks quite likely.
