300s by India in ODIs

India won the 1st ODI against SL in Nagpur in Oct-2005 thanks to some good hitting by Sachin, Irfan Pathan, Rahul Dravid backed up by excellent bowling by Murali Karthik and Harbhajan.

That brings me to the point that how many times has India scored more than 300? Any guesses? The number, I looked up, was 32!!! That shows the batting strength of the Indians alright, but how many have they won out of these? Is it 32? No. It is 27.

5 matches have been lost by the Indians. They are :
  1. against SL in Colombo, 1997 - Azhar and Jadeja scored centuries but India missed out by 2 runs!!!
  2. against SA in Nagpur, 1999/2000 - Sachin's 93 couldnt help India win the match.
  3. against NZ in Rajkot, 1999 - Jadeja scored 95 in a defeat of 43 runs.
  4. against Pak in Rawalpindi, 2004 - Again, the Master Blaster's 141 couldnt help India win the match.
  5. against Pak in Ahmedabad, 2005 - Sachin again in a losing cause, scoring 123 and bowling the last over with 3 runs to score against Inzy - couldnt quite do it with the ball. The series was tied with this win and India went from 2-0 to 2-4.
The wins have been listed here.

Of the 27 wins, 16 have come under Sourav Ganguly's captaincy (3 chasing a total of excess of 300 - the Lords match included), 8 under Azhar (once chasing - the match where Rajesh Chauhan hit a 6 of the penultimate ball of the innings), thrice under Rahul Dravid (once chasing against SL with Dhoni hitting a magnificent 183 n.o.), once under Sachin Tendulkar.

Lets hope that we have more of the 27 wins and the number of losses stay at 5 :)
