I think 20/20 cricket will ultimately win the day.
Purely because of its appeal to TV companies who will poor in the money.

20/20 might be popular but ODI will still remain. Of course, test matches are the ultimate.
The number of matches played might increase in 20/20 though, for reasons you have listed.
