Zimbabwe Series

What can I say about this one when I said this about the ongoing tri-series.

What was interesting is not the team selected for the ODI series against Zimbabwe but the 'A' team selection for tour to South Africa.

India A squad: Cheteshwar Pujara (capt.), Shikhar Dhawan, M Vijay, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, Dinesh Karthik, Ajinkya Rahane, Wriddhiman Saha, Parvez Rasool, Shahbaz Nadeem, Shami Ahmed, Stuart Binny, Ishwar Pandey, Jaydev Unadkat, Siddarth Kaul

The team is captained by the current No.3 batsman and contains both the openers who played against Australia in the last test match (well, Dhawan would have played if he had not been injured). Then, there are couple of folks who are in contention for the No. 6 slot (Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Dinesh Karthik, Suresh Raina). If Stuart Binny can redeem himself with a good performance, he could well given Irfan Pathan a run for his money for the slot of the coveted all-rounder position in the senior team.

Definitely, a good move by the selectors to ensure that the young players from the Indian team get a chance to experience the conditions first-hand before the test series starts later. There is no doubt that the test matches will be a different cup of tea with the likes of Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel, but nevertheless this experience will be handy. One would have liked Ravindra Jadeja to be part of the tour as well since he is Dhoni's No. 7 batsman (and as Dhoni has admitted that Jadeja has to work on his batting).

The bowlers in this list seem to be relatively new and unknown (with only Shami Ahmed having some recent experience and Unadkat with that unexpected test debut during the last South African tour). The selectors have to be credited for this move to get the youngsters some exposure - another feather in the cap for Sandeep Patil and Co.

Bench strength - did anyone say?

Rohit Sharma at Adelaide OvalImage via Wikipedia
The No.2 team in ODI cricket was supposed to be so strong that everyone considered them the team in form and expected them to have a strong bench as well. Earlier, everyone (including me) used to think that the average Ranji team (Mumbai or Tamil Nadu) would easily beat a Zimbabwe team in ODI. No longer.

All myths have been broken, thanks to a spirited effort from the Zimbabwe team, determined to prove their mark.

The first match of the Tri-series saw a team that was woeful in running between the wickets, nervous in their stroke-play, tentative in bowling and average overall. Whether the young guns were interested to make their mark is a question. The Indian cap was given to them a bit sooner and hence, one feels that they did not want it so much as the others. Suresh Raina did not have the Power Presence of a MSD and his limited bowling options did not offer him any respite.

Among the bowlers, only Vinay Kumar showed some glimpses of his talent, thanks to his slower ball (that got Coventry). The others are not in the same league as the other also-rans (Sreesanth, Irfan Pathan, RP Singh). Of course, it is not to say that they should not be given a chance - but, quite evidently the debutants did not grab the chances. Rohit Sharma and to an extent, Ravinder Jadeja did well in the batting department while Amit Mishra shone in the bowling.

The Indian team would do well to settle their nerves (if any) for the next match since they are against the much more powerful Lankans in the next match. Of course, there will be no complacency (for they are the underdogs now). There needs to be more determination in the batting and desperation on the field. Bowling will remain the weak link, that can be worked around by electing to chase.

Countdown starts for IPL3

Shane Warne.Image via Wikipedia
IPL3 is all set to start and the countdown has begun already. Reviews of the various franchise teams are on TV and all websites. Lalit Modi is busy as ever, twittering away to glory. Players from all countries are likely to join this version (though the high-profile Aussies will most likely stay away).

Shane Warne, Damien Martyn are already in town - finalizing their teams while Greame Smith is on his way (with his other team-mates).

The Caribbeans are finishing the ODI series against Zimbabwe before they board the flights to India - in fact, some of the players like Bravo, DR Smith are playing T20 in Oz right now.

The Indians must have been happy with the free time they have received, recuperating from injuries (Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan) while some played the Salil Ankola Benefit match. The domestic series (Deodhar Trophy) is being played out - finishing off in the next few days.

The Kiwis will wrap up their ODI series against Aussies at home before landing in India - the IPL is definitely one of the reasons the players feel safe (financially).

The English side is getting into test-mode against Bangladesh very soon - the ODI/T20 specialists thus are available to come over - Owais Shah, Bopara, Flintoff being few of them.

Pakistan, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh will miss out - probably one or two of the players from the latter 2 countries will play a match.

The selectors from the teams will be eyeing the IPL for new talent that might emerge out of nowhere. The captains must be hoping that their players get good practice at the same time praying for the absence of injuries.
